絵を見るなり、「この絵は欲しいなあ」と思った、それだけである。（中略）一枚の絵を心[しん]から欲しいと思う以上に、その絵についての完全な批評があるだろうか。

絵というものは、勉強してだんだん巧くなるというものでは決してない、と私は思っている。すくなくとも、巧くはなっても良くはならない。いい絵かきは絵をかきはじめた最初からいい絵をかいているし、反対に、二十代三十代でろくな仕事ができなければ、その人が五十になっていい絵をかきだすというようなことは望んでも無駄だ。絵かきは二十代三十代にかけて、人によって多少のちがいはあっても、要するにその人の初期にいち早くピークに達してしまい、あとはたださまざまなヴァリエーションがあるだけだと言っても言い過ぎではあるまい。絵の才能というものがそういうものであり、また、最初に達したその高さを、形は変っても、しまいまで持ちこたえられるのが才能だとも言えるのではあるまいか。

絵というものは、解るとか解らないとかいう前に、ひと目で、見る者に否応なく頭を下げさせるようなものがなければ絵とは言えない、というのが私の持論である。

いまの絵が概してつまらないのは、要するに、この「ね、見て、見て、」がいけないのだと思う。
